As Guest of Honour, Helen addressed global leaders, policymakers and community organisations on the importance of sustainability, partnership working and community-led solutions, values that sit at the heart of Keech.

Turning words into action

At Keech, we are committed to caring not only for our patients and families, but also for the world around us.

With 39 charity shops across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes, we play an important role in promoting responsible reuse and reducing waste. Helen highlighted the growing global challenge of textile waste, where large volumes of second-hand clothing from Western countries can end up in landfill or on beaches in parts of West Africa.

Her message focused on the shared responsibility to create more sustainable systems:

“The clothes we wear connect us culturally, economically and environmentally. Let us ensure those connections are grounded in fairness, responsibility and respect.
Let us move from landfill to landmarks – not just in Ghana, but globally.”

Compassion, dignity and sustainability

Helen also reflected on her role as a patron, describing Keech as an organisation that combines compassionate care with a commitment to dignity, choice and sustainability.

This balance is central to Keech – delivering specialist care for local families while working responsibly for future generations.

Building global connections

Helen attended the summit with her husband, Professor Joe Nellis, with whom she has long-standing links to Ghana. During their visit, they reconnected with communities and initiatives they have supported for many years, including a school in the Volta region.

These global relationships reflect a shared belief in the power of community, collaboration and respect – values that also underpin Keech’s work closer to home.

A shared responsibility

Helen’s message is a powerful reminder that sustainability is a shared responsibility. Whether through donating to our shops, choosing to shop sustainably or supporting our work, our community plays a vital role in reducing environmental impact while helping Keech continue to deliver specialist care.
