When staff became aware that a patient in our Adult In-Patient Unit would be celebrating what is expected to be his last birthday. Teams across the hospice quickly came together to make sure it didn’t go unmarked, creating a day filled with thoughtful touches and kindness.

Bringing the idea to life

Zara, Digital Channels Manager, explained:

“No two days at Keech are the same, and when I overheard a conversation about a patient celebrating his birthday with us on our Adult In-Patient Unit, I knew I wanted to help. Being able to create special moments like these reminds me of why I do what I do. It’s the little details that matter and go a long way – especially during a stay with us.”

Working together across clinical teams, Fundraising, and Marketing and Communications, colleagues organised a celebration tailored to the patient’s interests.

With generous support from the local community, Domino’s (Luton and Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire) kindly donated food and drinks for the celebration, while Tesco Flitwick provided a thoughtful gift for the patient. Our Head of Marketing, Mellissa Higgins also donated balloons and banners to decorate the room. Their contributions helped make the day feel even more special and ensured the celebration was both personal and memorable for the patient and his family.

A day to remember

On the day, it was the personal touches that made all the difference.

A live violin performance of Happy Birthday from Kirsty, our Music Therapist and a cake baked by hospice chef Elizabeth, who joined the celebrations, helped create a warm and joyful atmosphere for both the patient and his family.

The patient, who shared that he does not usually celebrate his birthday, said: “I’m so happy and deeply moved by the care and thought that had gone into every detail. I just can’t believe it, such a kind surprise.”

A team effort

Kevin, Clinical Nurse Specialist AIPU, said:

“It’s that bespoke, holistic care that makes such an impact on quality of life. More widely, it reflects the unified approach of the hospice and our shared values. Simple things mean a lot, and this is something to be proud to be part of.”

Jennie, Play Specialist, said:

“I was really pleased to be able to support the team with this. It means a lot to come together across different areas of the hospice to create something special for a patient, it really shows how everyone at Keech goes above and beyond to make the difference.”

Claire, Fundraising Engagement Partner, added:

“Being able to make a difficult time a little brighter for him and his family was a privilege. Moments like this remind me how much I love working here, and I’m proud to be part of a team that goes above and beyond.”

This celebration is a simple but powerful reminder of how compassion, teamwork and community support come together at Keech to create moments that truly matter.

Thanks again to Tesco Flitwick and Domino’s Pizza.
