Throughout May, the appeal will highlight the life-changing impact of hospice care for babies, children, young people and adults living with life-limiting conditions across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes. As a charity, Keech provides specialist end-of-life care free of charge, and relies on the generosity of supporters to continue this vital work.

Care the goes beyond the expected

At Keech Hospice, care means far more than medical support. It means walking alongside families through some of the most challenging moments they will ever face — offering comfort, dignity, expert symptom management and emotional support, sometimes over months or even years.

End-of-life care is not confined to the final days. For many families, it includes careful planning, relief from pain and anxiety, and the reassurance of knowing someone will always be there when it matters most.

A family’s story

At the heart of this Spring Appeal are the real stories of local families whose lives have been touched by Keech.

One of those families is Kayleigh and Sam, parents to Evelyn, who was born with a rare condition called MIRAGE syndrome.

Kayleigh explains:

“At first, when a nurse mentioned Keech Hospice, we didn’t think it was for us. We thought hospices were only for people whose death was imminent, and Evelyn was doing well at the time. We didn’t realise how much support they could offer families like ours.

But once we started visiting Keech, everything changed. Keech was a breath of fresh air. I just wish we’d found them sooner.”

Sam adds:

“Keech helped turn something that could have been traumatic into something beautiful. They gave us special moments that we’ll never forget.”

When Evelyn died peacefully at Keech, she was cuddled up in her mummy’s arms as they sang her favourite bedtime song — a moment filled with love, tenderness and compassion.

A nurse’s perspective

Kevin, a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Keech, has worked in palliative care for almost 20 years. He sees first-hand the difference hospice support makes every single day.

“I’ve learned that end-of-life care isn’t only about dying; it’s about living well right to the very last moment. It’s about dignity, comfort and compassion.

I see how much it matters for someone to feel safe, heard and cared for — whether that’s at home surrounded by family, or here at the hospice. Choice at this time of life is incredibly powerful, and it can make all the difference.

Hospice care changes lives — even at the very end of life — and with your support, we can be there for everyone who needs us.”
