“As we mark Occupational Therapy Week 2025, I’m reflecting on the power of early intervention, and how it helped David live fully, not just longer.

When I first met David, he had just received a life-limiting diagnosis. He was overwhelmed by the news, and by the uncertainty of what lay ahead. That’s where occupational therapy (OT) came in – not as a last resort, but as a first step.

Rapid access to OT after diagnosis

This year’s OT Week theme, “Right Support, Right Time”, couldn’t be more fitting. By stepping in early, I was able to help David begin adapting to his changing needs straight away. We didn’t wait until things became critical. Instead, we worked together to make small, meaningful changes that gave him control and confidence. OT is all about prevention, not just crisis response, and David’s journey proves why that matters.

Preserving independence

One of David’s biggest fears was losing his independence. With tools like the Neater Eater, he was able to continue eating independently – a simple act, but one that preserved his dignity and autonomy. These early adjustments helped delay dependency and reassured him that he could still do things for himself. That’s the heart of OT: enabling, not replacing.

Holistic, person-centred support

Occupational Therapy is much more than just equipment, it’s about emotional and physical wellbeing too. For David, hydrotherapy and exercise circuits weren’t just physical activities; they were sources of comfort, joy, and connection. We focused on what mattered to him, tailoring support to his goals and values. That’s what person-centred care looks like: listening, adapting, and empowering.

Living well, not just longer

David’s story is a powerful testament to how OT helps people live fully, even in the face of a life-limiting condition. Through early support, practical tools, and holistic care, David found moments of joy, purpose, and peace.

As we celebrate OT Week, I also want to highlight Keech Hospice’s Wrap a family in care campaign. At Keech, we know that serious illness affects the whole family. That’s why we offer emotional, spiritual, and practical support for patients and for their loved ones too. Whether it’s memory-making, bereavement groups, or simply a safe space to talk, Keech wraps families in care every step of the way.

This OT Week, let’s raise awareness of the life-changing impact of occupational therapy—and the importance of compassionate, family-centred care.”
