Our hospice has welcomed three new trustees after reimagining how we recruit people to our board—putting diversity, lived experience and fresh perspectives at the heart of the process.

“Hospice care isn’t just for older people,” says Faith Hojeer, Head of Volunteering.

“We care for children, young adults and families from all kinds of backgrounds. To reflect that, we need trustees who bring different voices and experiences to the table.”

A new approach

Instead of relying on traditional routes, we launched an open and inclusive trustee recruitment campaign, inviting applications from people who might never have considered the role before. Applicants could even send a short video instead of a written form and were encouraged to visit the hospice to see first-hand the difference we make.

The campaign was promoted across social media, LinkedIn, universities and through the Young Trustees Movement, helping to reach younger and more diverse candidates.

The outcome

From nine shortlisted candidates, three trustees were appointed—strengthening our leadership and ensuring our board better reflects the community we serve. Two other applicants are now giving their expertise as volunteers, adding real value in specialist roles.

Looking ahead

Our board now stands at 11 members, but we aren’t stopping there. The search continues for a trustee with fundraising expertise, while mentoring opportunities are being explored to support young people who may become trustees in the future.

“This wasn’t just about filling seats,” Faith adds.

“It’s about building a stronger board so we can deliver the very best hospice care for everyone who needs us.”
