"When you’re not alone, you’re not scared"

Reflections from Liz Searle, CEO at Keech Hospice

As a registered nurse, I’ve always believed that the best care doesn’t just treat illness — it connects people. That belief was reaffirmed today during my visit to the Living Well Centre in Bedford.

Many of the men described our services as a lifeline. Some attend three different groups each week. We support men of all ages — all living with serious illness or coping with loss. One man suggested we consider evening sessions for those still in work — a small ask that reflects just how much this space matters.

I also heard about a gentleman who uses our hydrotherapy pool in Luton and now attends sessions in Bedford too. After one recent visit, he felt unsteady returning to his car. A staff member quietly stepped in and made sure he got there safely — no fuss, just kindness. He later emailed our Let Me Help inbox to say thank you. That message came to me, and I had the privilege of passing that thanks on with a card to the team member involved. It felt special — like closing a circle of care.

In every conversation, the same themes emerged: peer support, community, connection. The reassurance of seeing others on a similar journey. One man told me he hadn’t felt like coming in that day — but he knew it would help. He left with a big smile on his face.

The words that will stay with me are these:

“When you’re not alone, you’re not scared. And when you’re not scared, you’re in less pain.”

In palliative care we know that total pain is multifaceted, made up of physical, psychological, social and spiritual pain. Being pain free is paying attention to all these aspects together.

That’s what our Living Well Centre services offer — care, dignity and hope. For as long as we can.
