What are compassionate neighbours?

A social movement founded by St. Joseph’s hospice in 2014,
Compassionate Neighbours are a network of trained volunteers who offer their time, companionship, and support to people living with a life-limiting illness in their local area.

Compassionate Neighbours can help support you or a loved one by:

  • Offering companionship, emotional and practical support and a listening ear
  • Helping you to stay connected to your friends you’re your community
  • Rasing awareness of important support services that are available to you

How can Compassionate Neighbours help?

A Compassionate Neighbour will support you by:

  • Visiting you regularly
  • Offering friendship, emotional support and a listening ear
  • Helping you to do the things you enjoy
  • Helping you stay connected with others

We’ll assess your needs over the phone and visit you at home before trying to match with a volunteer.
It’s a flexible, volunteer-led service and can be tailored to what you need and when (about 1 hour/week).
Please note, Compassionate Neighbours provide support by doing things with you (not for you). They do not offer clinical support, shopping, personal care or full-time cleaning or gardening.

How do I access the service?

Compassionate Neighbours is available to anyone who has been diagnosed with a potentially life-limiting illness or their loved ones.

If you or a family member would like to access our Compassionate Neighbours programme, please contact Keech on 01582 492339 and ask to speak to our Compassionate Neighbours co-ordinator. Alternatively email Keech at info@keech.org.uk

We’ll assess your needs over the phone and visit you at home before trying to match with a trained volunteer.

How much does it cost?

Like all Keech hospice services, Compassionate Neighbours is completely free of charge.

We can only deliver the services thanks to the generosity of the local community and the volunteers involved.

If you’d like to make a donation to support our services, you can do that here.
