A Lasting Tribute: Sammi and Chester’s Journey for Keech Hospice

Samantha “Sammi” Wenn has shown extraordinary dedication to Keech Hospice in memory of her late father, Robert, whose care there meant so much to their family.

Following Robert’s leukaemia diagnosis, Keech became a place of comfort and support during an incredibly difficult time. He especially enjoyed visiting the Wellbeing Clinic to see “his girls,” as he affectionately called the team, and spending quiet moments in the gardens, sitting by the pond on his favourite bench. Those memories remain very close to the family’s hearts, and Keech continues to be a special place they return to often.

Determined to honour her father’s final wish and continue supporting the hospice he cared so deeply about, Sammi, alongside her horse Chester, began a series of heartfelt fundraising efforts. Together, they have raised more than £2,000 for Keech — and the impact of their work continues to grow.

One of Sammi’s most moving projects began with a poppy-covered rug, created in partnership with the Royal British Legion to remember the horses who served alongside soldiers in war. Building on this idea, Sammi went on to create a heart-themed rug in Keech’s new colours in her father’s memory. The response from the community was phenomenal, with hundreds of handmade hearts arriving by post.

In a true family effort, Sammi’s mum, Eileen Wenn, lovingly hand-stitched each heart onto Chester’s 6’6” rug. The project raised thousands of pounds for Keech and captured the hearts of many beyond the local community.

Sammi and Chester have since proudly led local Remembrance parades, using each event to honour Robert’s memory while raising awareness of Keech’s vital work supporting families experiencing loss. Their dedication has been recognised nationally, with Sammi shortlisted for the BBC Make A Difference Awards 2025, where she proudly came home with an award for her work for Keech. She was also nominated for the Horse & Hound Awards 2025 in recognition of the incredible fundraising efforts made on Keech’s behalf.

Throughout the year, Sammi continues to organise events including Christmas and Halloween displays, ensuring that her father’s legacy of kindness and generosity lives on.

Reflecting on their journey, Sammi says:

“We are incredibly proud to be able to continue to support Keech in my father’s memory. We know this is what he wanted. You are all angels, and you deserve so much support to continue caring for other families just as you cared for ours.”

Sammi and Chester’s story is a powerful reminder of how love, remembrance, and community can come together to make a lasting difference — and Keech is deeply grateful to be part of that journey.
