Who are Compassionate Neighbours
A social movement founded by St. Joseph’s hospice in 2014 to help reduce loneliness and social isolation
Compassionate Neighbours are a network of trained volunteers who offer their time, companionship, and support to people living with a life-limiting illness in their local area. Compassionate Neighbours help others by:
- Offering companionship, emotional and practical support and a listening ear
- Helping them to stay connected to their friends and the community
- Directing your community member to important support services
Why volunteer and what’s involved?
Becoming a Compassionate Neighbour is your chance to make a real difference by reducing loneliness and fostering meaningful connections in your community. It’s an opportunity to grow personally through new experiences and insights that enrich your life, all while sharing your time and talents to bring comfort and joy to someone who truly needs it.
As a Compassionate Neighbour, you’ll regularly spend time with someone, building a relationship based on shared interests and offering emotional support during life’s toughest moments. Your role helps people stay connected to their community, providing companionship without the need for personal care, medical support, or household help. It’s all about creating genuine connections that matter.
